NSFW – Creating A Work Culture Free of Sexual Harassment

In 1979, reactor number 2 of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania experienced a partial meltdown with evacuations and release cleanup costs of about $1 billion dollars. Three Mile Island completely changed the nuclear industry forever. After Three Mile Island, companies developed work cultures focused on safety. Safeguards, policies, procedures, and practices that continue almost 40 years later.

The #MeToo movement is to companies what Three Mile Island was to the nuclear industry. It is time for radical change. It is time to overhaul policies, procedures, and practices to create company cultures free of sexual harassment

We are where we work and what we do. We create our work culture. We are influenced by our work culture. The physical environment impacts how we view our work and our relationships with others at work.

There is a theory in sociology called “The Broken Window Theory.” This theory proposes that if there is a broken window in a neighborhood that isn’t repaired quickly, the neighborhood spirals downward. The environment of disrepair leads to destructive behaviors like graffiti and vandalism.

I propose “The Copy Room Theory.” If the copy room is messy, dark, and isolated, the company culture will spiral downward. The copy room is a harbinger of management’s commitment to staff. The neglected environment leads to negative behaviors.

A negative neglected environment brings out the worst in employees, including sexually harassing behaviors.

The opposite is also true. A positive environment lifts people up and creates a work culture that brings out the best in people.

To facilitate employees commitment to excellence, conduct an assessment of the work environment beginning with arriving at the building, continuing inside and in all areas. Make whatever changes are needed so the work environment is meticulously maintained. Employees will be guided to be their best selves and do the right thing.
